CSIR-CSIO is also part of the MTech (Mechatronics) programme of the Bengal Science and Engineering University, Shibpur (BESU) along with two other CSIR labs, CSIR- Central Mechanical Engineering Research Institute (CSIR-CMERI) at Durgapur and CSIR-Central Electronics Engineering Research Institute (CSIR-CEERI). During the second semester students attend two residential, full-time courses at CSIR-CSIO for a six week period. Additionally, a few students from every batch opt to do their full time, residential projects during their final year of the MTech programme. As of 2013 January two such former MTech(Mechatronics) students are PhD scholars at CSIR-CSIO.
