Metallurgy & Foundry Division has carried out activities related to material analysis for metal & alloys, Steels, Cast Iron, Brass, Bronze, Aluminium & Tin alloys for different elements like Copper, Nickel, Tin, Iron, Manganese, Chromium, Lead, Carbon & Sulphur.  The analysis has been carried out by wet method of analysis and instrumental methods of analysis such as Microprocessor based Carbon & Sulphur Analyzer (Eltra -100), Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer (Perkin-Elmer) and UV - Visible  Spectrophotometer.  The facilities has been utilized by various industries in and around Chandigarh like Punjab Tractor Ltd.,  Swaraj Combine Division, Gilard Electronics Ltd., Panjab Bio-chemicals.

Metallurgy Division also carried out number of analysis of water and soil samples for determination total selenium contents using Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer with hydride  generation system.  This work was carried out in association of Central Ground Water Board and Chemistry Department, Panjab University, Chandigarh.

Large number of Edible oil samples have been analyzed for the determination of metallic impurities like Copper, Nickel & Iron.  Analysis of other organic compounds in edible oils have been carried out using Gas Chromatographic method.   This work relates to mission mode programme, Technology Mission Oil Seeds Pulses & Maize.  Number of adsorption studies of different dyes on polyaniline have been carried out.   The adsorption has been studied using UV – Visible Spectrophotometer.

 

CSIO has the facilities for mechanical testing of metals & alloys.  The facilities are Tensile testing, Elongation Macro & Micro hardness testing.  These testing have been carried out for number of industries like Himachal Fine Blanks, Parwanoo, M/s Amrit Banspati, Rajpura, Ordance Cable Factory and CSIO R&D Projects.

Another facility which is being regularly utilized is the heat treatment.  This facility is mainly utilized for in house project for Head-up Display components, Aluminium parts, Copper Beryllium components, hardening of high carbon steels etc.

Metallography  facilities are being used for analysis the various components for measuring the depth of carborization, surface structure, cracks and failure analysis of components.
