Central Scientific Instruments Organisation (CSIO) is a premier national laboratory dedicated  to research, design and development of scientific and industrial instruments. It is one of the constituent laboratories of the Council of Scientific & Industrial Research (CSIR), India .A multi-disciplinary and multi-dimensional apex industrial research & development organisation the country.

Established in October 1959, CSIO was chartered to stimulate the growth of indigenous instrument industry in the country through development of contemporary technologies and other scientific & technological assistance.

Initially located at New Delhi, CSIO moved to Chandigarh  in 1962– the City Beautiful in the north west of Delhi. CSIO Campus (spread over an area of approximately 120 acres) comprises of Office Buildings, R&D Laboratories, Indo-Swiss Training Centre and a Housing Complex. An austere four-storey building and the accompanying workshops were inaugurated in December 1967. Another four-storey block was added in 1976 for housing  R&D Divisions, Library, etc. During mid-eighties, the laboratory buildings and infrastructural facilities were modernized in order to gear the Institute towards taking up development projects in challenging and emerging areas of technology. A separate Administrative Block  was inaugurated in September 1994.

With a view to meeting the growing demand of well trained instrument technologists, Indo-Swiss Training Centre (ISTC) was started in December 1963 with the co-operation of Swiss Foundation for Technical Assistance, Zurich, Switzerland.

CSIO is a multi-disciplinary organization having well equipped laboratories manned by highly qualified and well trained staff with infrastructural facilities in the areas of microelectronics, optics, applied physics, electronics, mechanical engineering, etc.

Large number of instruments ranging from simple to highly sophisticated ones, have been designed and developed by the Institute and their know-hows have been passed on to the industry for commercial exploitation. Having contributed substantially towards the growth of the scientific instruments industry in the country, CSIO enjoys high degree of credibility among the users of the instruments as well as the instrument industry.

Mission

To be a leader at national level for designing and developing scientific and industrial  instrument systems and devices; play a lead role in providing repair , maintenance & calibration and training of instrument technologists and be a custodian of instrumentation activity  in the country.

MANDATE

  • To undertake research, design and development of scientific and industrial instruments, components and instrument systems.

  • To undertake repair and maintenance of sophisticated instruments through a network of service & maintenance centres located in various parts of the country.

  • To offer technical assistance to industries and various other users of instruments by way of fabrication, testing, calibration, analysis and performance evaluation, etc.

  • To provide advanced training in instrument technology aimed at human resource development for the benefit of precision instrument industry and R&D institutions.

  • Industrial instruments in the country and to collate, coordinate and disseminate information on the subject.

  • To assist in evolving national standards for instruments in collaboration with other institutes. To survey and assess the present and future needs of various types of scientific and like Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS).

  • To assist in the formulation and coordination of policies and procedures related to the development of the instrument industry

Task oriented R&D projects are currently being pursued with grant - in - aid  user agencies and govt. departments  like  Department  of  Science  & Technology (DST), Department  of  Information Technology( DIT), Technology Mission on Oilseeds, Pulses  & Maize (TMOP&M), Ministry of Agriculture, Defence Research and Development Organisation ( DRDO) and many others.

Repair and maintenance services for a wide variety of scientific and industrial instruments are  provided by CSIO through its well recognized  Service & Maintenance (S&M) Centres located in Delhi and Chennai besides S&M Division in the main campus. These Centres have been serving a major national cause by repairing and revitalizing a large variety of instruments worth several millions of Rupees particularly those imported from abroad thus saving considerable amount of foreign exchange in the country .

Technology Transfers   Technical Services

CSIO offers technical know-hows for a variety of instruments for commercialization by the industry. The developed instruments find wide applications in  industry, medical, educational and R&D institutions . Know-hows offered are fully engineered and commercially viable. A prototype centre has been especially established to display the laboratory models & prototypes of the instruments and components developed.

Specialized services offered by CSIO include testing and calibration of instruments and components; fabrication, characterization, and evaluation of precision optical components /devices; precision mechanical measurements; chemical analysis, metallography, mechanical testing and heat treatment.

ROADMAP FOR FUTURE

CSIO redefines its scientific and technological focus  to play a stellar role towards the growth of the instrumentation activity .

  • Venturing into non-conventional areas e.g. prosthetics,   special security systems

  • Emphasis on synergistic approach

  • Projects to be identified by the industry & users, stronger alliances with Academic Institutions, DRDO Labs
