Current R & D activities include, but are not limited to,
Analytical Instrumentation: Excellent, in-house analytical and characterization facilities (e.g., a number of spectroscopic techniques, scanning electron microscope, confocal laser scanning microscopy, atomic force microscope, dynamic light scattering, electrochemical workstation, raman microscope etc.) provide support for cutting-edge research in the division.
E-waste Management: The problem of solid waste accumulation from spent consumer electronics is on the rise. In a developing country like India, most of the recycling technologies do not yield economically viable products. This thrust encompasses the development of novel chemical routes for simultaneous recycling and recovery of relevant materials from waste products.
Materials for Microwave Absorption: Recently, there has been a great increase in the number of electronics devices that utilize GHz range microwave radiation largely due to high rate of data transfer. Therefore, ferrite based magnetic nanocomposites are being developed for microwave absorption applications.
UV-VIS-NIR based Miniaturized Sensing: The feasibility of using important wavelengths in the near infrared (NIR) spectrometer for rapid detection of quality parameters in food products and for detection of several internal attributes of fruits has been recently tested and remains the subject of intense research.
Materials for Biomedical Applications: Development of novel materials for biomedical intervention have been of prime significance. Examples include the development of materials as drug delivery platforms; multifunctional materials for theranostic applications; Engineering magnetically stimulated implantable patches for localized tumor therapy; magnetic/fluorescent probes for bioimaging; and advanced nanostructured/polymeric surfaces for inhibition of biofouling with higher efficiency. 
Biosensors: This area of research focusses on the development of specially functionalized materials for detection of cancer specific antigens, cardiac markers, food and water borne pathogens. Specific biological recognition moieties (antigen/antibody) conjugated to various materials (Quantum dots, Metal Organic Frameworks, Metal Nanoparticles, Carbon Nanomaterials). These interactions are exploited to induce a change in a measurable quantity (fluorescence, electrochemical, raman scattering, etc).
